Over 200,000 Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS) procedures are performed in the U.S. each year for invasive breast cancer and Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS); 20-25% of BCS procedures fail to achieve clear tumor margins, thus requiring patients to undergo re-excision surgery. Re-excision surgery is associated with poorer cosmesis, more difficult recovery, and increased emotional strain for patients. In addition, concern regarding inadequate excision often drives surgeons to remove more breast tissue, which also prolongs recovery and increases disfiguration.<\/p>\n
