Frequently Asked Questions

Are BCL™s Patient-specific?

add_circle_outline

Yes, because all patients’ cases vary, each BCL™ is made “Just in time” for each patient.

How does a “surgical position” MRI help the surgeon?

add_circle_outline

By capturing the exact patient anatomy in the surgical position (supine) MRI, the surgeon is able to accurately visualize their surgical field in an augmented 3D view using Visualizer™ . At the time of surgery, such anatomic information is accurately transferred onto the patient’s breast using a patient-specific form called the BCL™ .

What are the potential benefits of using the BCL™ device?

add_circle_outline

1. The BCL™ device may decrease the positive margin rate by delineating the tumor edges during surgery.
2. It may decrease the volume of breast tissue removed during surgery.
3. It removes the need for additional wire localization immediately before surgery.
4. It provides 3D visualization of cancers in the breast that allows investigators to observe their relationship to the skin and chest wall and places bracketing wires that offer additional guidance to surgeons beyond the standard wire localization.

How is the BCL™ device made, and how does it benefit me?

add_circle_outline

The BCL™ is created using a 3D printing process involving a digital model that is derived from the patient’s supine MRI data.  The BCL™ device itself is made from a photopolymer resin material.  Each device is custom-made for an individual patient.  Utilizing the custom device and the technology during surgery may decrease the positive margin rate, potentially leading to less need for re-excision surgery.

What is a Breast Cancer Locator ™ ?

add_circle_outline

The Breast Cancer Locator™ (BCL™) is a 3-D printed surgical guide that assists surgeons with the tumor’s size, orientation, and shape.
